chapter nine

The days drag on. I’ve never had such a boring summer and I actually start thinking it would be a good thing to go back to school. That is so not like me. Maybe it’s another sign of growing up? Must be a sign of something.

Trinity continues to do research on ghosts, washstands and cases of murder involving sisters. I don’t tell her that I now sleep with a night-light on in my room. I don’t want any unexpected visitors. when Trinity’s mother finds out what she’s up to, she freaks.

“Trinity, you are a crazy girl! Don’t you remember when my own Mamang, God rest her soul, died last year?”

Trinity says, “How could I forget?”

“Ah!” says Mrs. Turner. “It was dreadpul. I had to sleep in one room with all six of my sisters por protection. Our Mamang was not so nice, huh? We thought she was going to come back and haunt us, she was so miserable. Por a whole week, we did this. You leave the dead alone!”

“Mama,” Trinity says, “Lola didn’t come back to haunt anyone. Besides, I’m trying to send Safira’s ghost on, not bring her back.”

Mrs. Turner frowns. She calls Mr. Turner into the kitchen and tries to get him to convince Trinity. Instead, he laughs and puts his arm around Mrs. Turner. “You are so cute. Did I ever tell you how cute you are?” Then he gives her a great big kiss. Trin and I hustle out of there.

“They are so weird,” Trinity mutters.

“Um,” I say. “Not really.”

“Oh, come on, Safira. Look at how old they are. Shouldn’t they be over that stuff by now?”

She has a point.

As more days trickle past, an awful feeling rumbles in the pit of my stomach and I get the shivers more and more. I’ve never been the sickly sort, but I start to wonder if there’s something seriously wrong with me. Maybe I have a rare form of cancer or some other awful disease? I finally tell Mom about it.

She sighs, pats my arm and says, “We’re all feeling nervous, Safira. It’s only two more days until the wedding.” She looks at me and adds, “Just make sure you get lots of rest and exercise. And don’t forget to eat right.”

Talk about your standard Mom advice. But since I don’t have any better ideas, I follow her advice and go for a run. When I get home, the only one in the house is Mya. As I walk past her room on the way to mine, I notice her door is open. Not normal. Even less normal is the silence. Mya always plays music when she’s in her room. I pause at the open door and say, “Hey.”

There’s the distinct sound of a nose being blown, and a muffled, “What?”

I take a huge risk and step inside. “Are you okay, Mya?”

She’s scrunched up on her bed with her back to the door. She says, “Does it look like I’m okay?”

I can’t believe she actually said so many words to me.
